After 14 years with WIMCO, Steve Baker is retiring and setting sail for distant shores. We sat down with him and asked him a few questions about his time at WIMCO:
Your best trip with WIMCO?
“The best trip I had was to Anguilla, St Martin, and St Barths in the summer of 2018 with Suzanne Goulart and Michael Chisholm – it was our first trip back to the islands after they were hit hard by Hurricane Irma in 2017. Each island had made an amazing recovery and it was great to see how far they had come. The island spirit was so strong, especially on St Barths.”

What is your all-time favorite villa?
“My favorite villa is on St Barths — villa WV MOZ at the very end of the point on Pointe Milou. It is not the most modern, but it is so comfortable, has an amazing view and it is right on the sea — all you hear is the sound of the waves on the shore. Also, in addition to cleaning, the housekeeper does turn down service, guest laundry (fluff and fold) and goes out to the patisserie 6 mornings a week to bring fresh French pastries.”

What Island you’d retire to?
“If I could retire there, I’d choose St Barths — it is safe, easy-going, beautiful and has great restaurants at all price levels. The people are great and the lifestyle is wonderful.”

What was one of your best meals during your WIMCO travels?
“My favorite meals were at Le Tamarin on St Barths. Although it doesn’t have a sea view, the garden setting is beautiful, especially with the lighting in the evening–the staff is very friendly and the food is great.”

What is a Funny colleague story you’d like to share?
“One of my colleagues and I were on a trip inspecting villas in the St Tropez area–we had a nice time, but when we went out for dinner, she’d frequently ask other restaurant patrons for a cigarette. She didn’t carry cigarettes as she was trying to quit. It was a little embarrassing!”
