What are the top five things to do in Jamaica?

1. Enjoy Montego Bay’s splendid beaches

One of Montego Bay's best features is the many beaches that dot the area. Some of the best of these are Doctor's Cave Beach, with its ample amenities and free WiFi access; AquaSol Beach Park, with its water slides and other entertainment for kids all right on the beach; and the HipStrip, a section of Gloucester Avenue adjacent to the beach with some of the area's most popular shops, restaurants and attractions.

Most of the beaches in Montego Bay have watersports concession huts where you can rent a boat or a catamaran, hire a fishing or sailing boat or find someone to take you out water skiing or windsurfing.

Good for all ages.

2. Visit the Impressive Rose Hall Great House

Rose Hall is one of the most popular attractions in Montego Bay. A remnant from the British Colonial plantation period, this large, restored manor house sits on 290 acres, and is about 20 minutes outside of Montego Bay.

It was once the home of Annee Palmer, known as the White Witch of Rose Hall, who was said to have murdered three husbands before being killed herself by one of the estate workers. The house was built in 1742, and today, it is filled with period antiques and offers a glimpse into that era of Jamaican history. There's even a spooky candlelit tour on selected nights.

Admission to the house is by tour only, so it's a good idea to reserve your tickets ahead of time.

Good for couples and families with older children.

3. Enjoy a Relaxed Trip on the Martha Brae River

Rafting along the Martha Brae River outside of Montego Bay is a great activity for couples and for families as well. The pace is slow and relaxed, and you can take in the lovely scenery as you float past.

The trip is about three miles long, and you'll sit on bamboo rafts and be steered by local guides who will tell you about the area and its flora and fauna.

Contact Jamaica Rafting or your WIMCO representative to make your reservations.

Good for all ages.

4. Visit These Bird Sanctuaries and Botanical Gardens

Jamaica is home to an astounding number of bird species. You can visit these lovely creatures in their natural habitat at the Rocklands Bird Sanctuary, located about 30 minutes outside of Montego Bay. At this fun, family-run attraction you can feed and photograph the exotic birds.

Another place to interact with the local flora and fauna is the Natango Gallery. This tropical retreat is located just outside of town, at the top of a hill overlooking the sea. The site features beautiful botanical gardens, including a Fairy Garden and a Dinosaur era garden. The gift shop has a good selection of local shells and shell crafts.

Good for families with kids.

5. World Class Golfing

Golfers love the Montego Bay area and its many championship golf courses. Not only are they challenging, but many offer spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea.

White Witch of Rose Hall Golf Course, designed by Robert von Hagge, is one of the newest and one of the most scenic. This 6,758-yard, Par 71 treasure is named for the plantation’s beautiful but wicked 19th century plantation mistress, Annee Palme.

Its sister course, Cinnamon Hill Golf Course, has a good selection of seaside and mountain view holes. This course has one of the best pro shops on the island. The course at Tryall Club, home to the PGA's Johnnie Walker Classic, is arguably the island's best course.

You don't have to stay at the resort (or be a professional golfer) to play the course. All three courses require that you use a caddie to carry your clubs.

Good for couples and extended families.
