Where is St. Tropez and Why Visit?
St. Tropez is located midway between Nice and Marseilles, France, on the Mediterranean Sea. The former fishing village became a resort town for wealthy Parisians in the 1920s and 1930s and an international resort in the 1960s after the town was featured in the 1956 movie, "And God Created Woman" with Brigitte Bardot.
With its colorful harbor, beautiful beaches and sparkling water, has been captivating visitors for more than 100 years. It's easy to see why. This international resort may attract celebrities and mega-yachts, but it still retains its sleepy, Provencal flavor.
Today, St. Tropez still attracts celebrities and wealthy tourists to its yacht-filled harbor, beaches and beach clubs, and nightclubs. The village also has a vibrant art and music scene and plenty of shops, markets and museums to explore.
What Is the Best Time to Visit St. Tropez?
St. Tropez and the French Riviera is beautiful year-round, but we think that the best times to visit are May and June, and then September and October, when the temperatures are still warm, and you are more likely to have the streets and beaches to yourself.
However, if you want to sit at a harborfront cafe and watch for celebrities, your best bet is to visit from Mid-June to late August.
How to get to St. Tropez
St. Tropez is located about 90 minutes by car from Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (IATA: NCE). Nonstop flights to Nice are available from New York City, Newark NJ and Montreal. Travel time from New York City is approximately 9.5 hours.
Alternatively, you can travel to Paris and take the high-speed train (TGV) from Austerlitz Station in Paris to St Raphael, just outside of St. Tropez. The train journey is about 4 hours and 40 minutes, and you can take a hydrofoil from St Raphael to St. Tropez. There is also a small airport in Toulon-Hyeres, about an hour's drive from St. Tropez. Seasonal non-stop flights are available from Paris, Brest, Copenhagen, Frankfurt and Geneva. The airport accepts private aircraft year-round.
Visitors from North America are required to carry a passport with at least six months validity remaining on it. No visa is required for stays of three months or less.
What are the top five things to do in St. Tropez?
You’ll rarely be bored in St. Tropez. There are a myriad of activities and exciting things to explore. Just a few of these include:
1. Walk the inner harbor. The harbor at St. Tropez is one of the most beautiful in Europe. The waterfront is lined with unique shops, art galleries, and cafes, and the harbor is filled with high-end watercraft, each one more spectacular than the last. There's a historic lighthouse at the edge of the waterfront that you can tour.
2. Lunch and lounge at beach clubs like Club 55. The beaches of St. Tropez, such as Tahiti Beach and Pampelonne beach, are one of the best parts about visiting St. Tropez. Unlike the pebble beaches in Nice and other parts of the French Riviera, the beaches in St. Tropez are soft, white sand. Many of the beaches have elegant eateries and "see and be seen" dance clubs, such as Club 55 and Nikki Beach, both on Pampelonne Beach.
3. Shop the open-air food markets. Exploring the food markets in St. Tropez is another highlight. The produce of Provence is lush, beautiful and delicious. One of the great things about staying in a luxury St. Tropez rental property is that you can bring some food home from the market to cook your own dinner.
4. Visit the Annonciade Museum. Located just outside of the harbor area, the Annonciade Museum is housed in a 16th century, former chapel. It features art inspired by the colors and atmosphere of the St. Tropez area by artists such as Henri Matisse, Paul Signac, Georges Braque and Paul Klee.
5. Explore the St. Tropez Citadel and the Maritime Museum. Built-in 1602 to defend France's southern coast, the Citadel houses the Maritime Museum, an interactive museum that features exhibits on the history of fishing, boating and marine exploration in the area.
